If you are starting as a webmaster, keep your domains in one place (e.g. Godaddy) cos when you have over a 100 and you want to manage them, its far easier if they are in one place.

Get a reseller hosting account, messing about with addon domains only works for so long and has some major drawbacks. With a reseller account you can have a FULL hosting account for every domain, and everything that that brings with it.

Get yourself setup some private nameservers, its easier to remember them and looks cool :)

Also if you have resller account, share some space with other resellers, you can link to your own sites with different ip which is better for search engine status:D

and also, if you are a begginer and want to try, awardspace.com is a free and fine hosting(it allows 2 domains in one hosting) and uni.cc is a nice, free domain service(your domain will be a subdomain like - domain.uni.cc - but you can use it same as a domain).

enom is another good domain registrar. For hosting, look for reliable and skip cheap & oversell hosting company.

You can get a FREE domain here. It's not a .com one, but it's better than xxx.subdomain.com (in my opinion)
