Sensitive case notes on vulnerable children in Essex have been found on a computer sold on eBay's auction site. Reports and details about fostering and adoption were found among 1,000 files on a £1.70 computer previously owned by Southend Borough Council.

The worst thing is this really doesnt surprise me. However....

My brother inlaw recently went to a recycling plant as part of learning how to improve and increase recycling. He was shown (as well as other things) a secure section where old PC's are firstly killed with massive magnets and then stripped down to remove tiny peices of gold etc. All data section are then crushed and shreaded.

The whole unit is secure and recorded on cameras, each pc is logged in and then logged again after being destroyed because companies pay for the service to ensure that no company data gets into the wrong hands.

I guess Southend Council are to tight to pay for the same service. :(
