CHILDREN have chosen a new name for a major £2.5m Guisborough care home.
Helen McArdle Care are developing a 54-bed facility on Park Lane on the site of the former St Paulinus Church, now re-established on The Avenue.
The firm and St Paulinus School have developed close links. The firm donated £5,000 for a new electronic library borrowing system after pupil Daniel Duffield, nine, wrote asking for help.
Now pupils have had a democratic vote to choose a new name for the care home which will be opened in November - and Park House was the winner.
The voting was in the school library which recently received funding from Helen McArdle Care’s Community Counts scheme.
Year 5 pupil Daniel, praised by headteacher Liz Huntley for his library funding idea, liked the name Park House. He said: “The care home is built on Park Lane, so that will keep the name.” Fellow pupil Thomas Aspin, 10, said: “I like Runswick Court because Runswick Bay is a nice beach near Guisborough.”
Anna Dainton, nine, liked Westgate Court: “Because it’s the name of the main street in Guisborough.”
Teacher in charge Rachel Bircham said: “Since we received the library funding, Helen McArdle has been keen to keep links.
“We intend to develop these in future with readings and singing and events by pupils at the home.”
Dawn Bianchi, senior operations manager at Helen McArdle Care, said: “When we started to build on the site of the St Paulinus Church grounds we were very aware of how much the church meant to the community, in particular the school. We’re keen to get the school involved in the development of the home and thought asking them to name the home would be the perfect way.
“We are also thrilled that the school has agreed to perform at our open day in November.”
