How long has PHP been around? Is it much newer then html or about the same age?
PHP has been around since 1995 and was called "Personal Home Page Tools" (PHP Tools). HTML has been around since around 1991.
Interestingly the internet was created years before HTML was first produced - no idea what they used before that
As far as understand it "the internet" was created by Some US Government project:

I believe there wasn't much of a language construct used before that. It was mainly just text based. Before the internet they used news groups and I believe those are still text based, but I'm not completely certain.
On a side note, PHP5 has been around since 2004... Almost 4 years... Yet I see so many websites and programs still made in PHP4. The server my sites are on are actually finnally gutting out php4... I wonder if others will follow. They are most likely getting ready for when php6 is released. It would be annoying to juggle php4, 5 and 6 on the same servers.
PHP6 is looking interesting too.
I think PHP has stood the test of time. I use it for all my server side scripting. Stuff ASP.NET
