I wonder if this form of captcha has been in existence for long and I have just come across if for the first time or its relatively new?
Basically, you are show the image of and animal and ask what animal it is, I think its one step ahead of the spammers for the moment.

Seen it cropped up a few places recently, in various forms. There was one that said "list the smallest to the largest" and the images were a ladybug, bike, church, planet. Easy to figure out and semantic based.

It's not new temi, MS where playing with this around 2 years back. but looks as if it could be beaten by the bots.

The latest version gets the user to ID the cats from the dogs from 12 images selected from over 3 million images MSR Asirra: A Human Interactive Proof

hope you like cats and dogs

I remember sites mentioning it a few years ago. If you could come up with your own image then you'll stand a better chance of it not being analysed by a piece of image recognition software.
