For almost as long as I can recall, e-commerce websites have tried to create some sense of community among the customers, subscribers, or whatever, of the site. My impression is that this has not been very successful, at least from a business point of view. Yet some online communities in the past have been really quite successful. For example, in his influential book "The Network Society," Manuel Castells describes social and political movements in the US and Europe that have used online communications to create and maintain their identities. Has it now become possible for businesses to use online media in order to create communities that they can exploit in a comparable way to real-world businesses, when they exploit a local community as a market or as a resource? If online communities exist, how do they differ from their real-world counterparts? What, in the broadest sense, is happening to our notion of what community means?
