Sex offenders' e-mail addresses are to be passed to social networking sites like Facebook and Bebo to prevent them contacting children.

Under government proposals, offenders who do not give police their address - or give a false one - would face up to five years in jail.

Websites would be expected to monitor the e-mail address usage or block them accessing the sites.

The Home Office said the new laws would apply to about 30,000 sex offenders.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said she wanted children to be "free from fear".

"We need to patrol the internet to keep predators away from children in the same way as we patrol the real world," she told GMTV.

Hmm, so have they thought about the fact that anyone can set up as many email addresses as they like?

    My thoughts exactly.

And free from fear - I don't think many children loose sleep at night because someone might be grooming them!

That really is a stupid comment. There are kids out there right at this second as I write this post that are probably being groomed by some sick person.

They probably don't have anyone to turn to or tell because they are either A) scared to say anything or B) No one will believe them.

I think there are many kids that lose sleep over being groomed, either virtually or in the real world.

Not enough is done in this world to protect kids from predators. Online or in the real world and it's totally sickening.

Pedophiles should have there genitals chopped of and thrown away.

The comment was referring to the fact that they don't KNOW their being groomed therefore wont exactly loose sleep over it. and if they do know - how difficult is it to block someone!?

Kids are being cotton wooled today. It's horrible, but kids will always die as a result of a horrbile accident or something more sinister, but the way in which you read newspapers today, you'd think that there was an axe murderer behind every corner.

I believe we're doing children more harm than good by keeping a hugely watchful eye on them. Sure, they shouldn't run around the street causing amok, but give a child a bike and two hours in your neighbourhood in the middle of summer, chances are they'll be back 2 hours later out of breath, and maybe a few scrapes, but nothing worse.

Then again, I'm not a parent, and live in a relatively safe area, so I'm hardly one to talk.
