Taking the electorate for granted - Lesson Learned

    In the age of 24-hour television news, and round-the-clock internet blogging, a mountain of analysis and discussion looms over every molehill of fact and figure.

    After last week's Iowa caucuses, and the Democrat and Republican primaries that followed in New Hampshire, we have heard the voices of perhaps half of 1% of all those entitled to vote in November's US presidential elections.

    The combined population of the two states taken together is less than 4.5 million, and each has peculiarities, so it is hard to extrapolate national conclusions from local voting.
