On Thursday, in an attempt to explain remarks he made earlier this year that were roundly criticized as being insensitive to Asian Americans, Washington, D.C., councilman Marion Barry pointed out that immigrating to the United States was difficult for many different ethnic groups. But he did it all wrong: "The Irish caught hell, the Jews caught hell, the Polacks caught hell," he said. Barry first tried to pretend he didn't say "Polacks" -- then said he meant to say "Polish."
